Golden Bell Mansion

Tiong Bahru Estate was one of the first areas of mass public housing in Singapore but before this the area was predominately settled by Hokkien heritage Chinese (from Fujian Province). Its streets are named after Chinese and Peranakan entrepreneurs and pioneers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The construction style of the estate is a mix of art deco and local Straits Settlements shop-house architecture. Today many of the original buildings in the area have been designated for preservation. The estate has retained a "Kampong" (village) spirit, and has become popular again for an artistic/bohemian community attracted to the historical Art Deco flats and its location. It is a vibrant local community with long term residents blending with the more recently attracted influx of young professionals and artisans. Join us for a ramble to find the Giok Hong Tian and Qi Tian Gong Temples, the grave of Tan Tock Seng, and the Tiong Bahru Market to name just a few of the hidden treasures of this area.
