AFSG will be studying Asian award-winning films and documentaries this session.  Come join this fan-tastic fun group as we look forward to seeing movies that have won awards either in their domestic film competitions, or awards from international film festivals like Cannes, Toronto, Sundance or Berlin.  Winners from the Singapore International Film Festival might also be included.

There will be 8 sessions starting on 11^th April and finishing 30^th May.  All sessions are on Zoom on Tuesday from 9:30 to noon.  Cost for the session:   $25.  This event in non-refundable.

This Film Group has now finished.  This season we will be watching films that are based on true life events! Whether they are based on a heart wrenching love story, a gory series of murders, or an expert swindler, true life stories capture the audience’s attention. 
And fact can certainly be stranger than fiction.

This Film Group has finished.  From Pages to Pictures –  Exploring the Literary world through film adaptations

Watching a film based on someone else's interpretation of a popular book allows us to understand the perspectives of others. It's always unique to see how our favourite book characters have been transformed. This season we will enjoy seeing literary characters come to life from a new viewpoint, through the eyes of the director and script writer.

Whatever type of novel you like, there is a film already being adapted. From Empire of the Sun to Crazy Rich Asians the list can go on.

Join AFSG in our First Season which begins on 4th of October and will last for 8 to 10 sessions . We watch a pre-selected film and then meet every Tuesday at 9.30 for film discussion. Movie links are sent out a week before the 'Zoom' meeting.

With the rise of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements in 2017, numerous actors were hit with allegations of sexual misconduct on-and off-set. As a result, HBO Network made intimacy coordinators a mandatory addition to all its film sets. Other big producers like Netflix and Amazon Prime soon followed suit.

Intimacy Coordinators are a new category of professionals who work on film and television sets to choreograph simulated sex between actors.

Most of their work is done during the shoot: choreographing intimate action, monitoring closed sets, and working with costume departments on modesty garments and prosthetics. But coordinators are also involved in the pre-production process with filmmakers, planning the types of touching and exposure that will be permitted and managing nudity riders along with actors' concerns.

Aastha Khanna is India’s First Certified Intimacy coordinator and Founder of The Intimacy Lab, through which she intends to educate and certify more intimacy coordinators in India.
With her, we’ll be discussing consent, boundaries and creating a safe space for actors on set while choreographing intimate scenes.

Perhaps it’s no surprise then that so many engaging stories revolve around family.Love can conquer incredible obstacles, like class divides, disapproving family members, and disaster. The experience of love sparks transformation in a film’s characters.

DIRECTOR’s CUT : Q&A with director Boo Junfeng

The Asian Film Study Group will discuss Singaporean director Boo Junfeng’s debut feature film Sandcastle (2010). 

It was the first Singaporean film to be invited to the International Critics' Week at Cannes Film Festival.The Director Boo Junfeng will join in a Q&A to discuss his vision & motivation behind the film.

The Asian Film Study Group will host the award winning Singaporean Director Anthony Chen on 19th Oct via Zoom. 
Anthony Chen is a film director, screenwriter and film producer.who has directed two feature films Ilo Ilo (2013) and Wet Season (2019). His critically acclaimed debut feature film, Ilo Ilo, won the Camera d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, making him the only Singaporean to have been awarded at Cannes.

His latest film 'Wet Season' was selected as the Singaporean entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards.

Join the AFSG for a very special screening of Singaporean film-maker Yeo Siew Hua's drama, A LAND IMAGINED  which has been selected as Singapore's entry to the Academy Awards' Best International Feature Film category. Critics have called this a 'deep and insightful film that delves into themes such as the social integration of migrant labourers.'
Screening will be followed by a Q&A session by the director. Hope you can join us and bring your friends - open to all.

Movies are stories. Movies are people who come out with ideas about something they want to say, something they want to tell someone. They tell us things we never could have known and give us a way to explore the past, the present and the future. Movies can start friendships, relationships. Movies  create debate,  create conversations, they also create a unique Film Culture!

Saint Jack, which some of you might have read, was written by Paul Theroux in 1973 and filmed by Peter Bogdanovich in 1979. The novel and movie are about Singapore’s seedy side of life in the Lion City. The movie was entirely shot in Singapore. It was banned here until 2006.
Ben Slator the author of Kinda Hot about adapting Paul Theroux’s book and making the film will be attending the screening. He will be giving inside info and answering questions after the screening

The Asian Film Study Group will watch the critically acclaimed Singaporean film 'Apprentice ' directed by Boo Junfeng. The film focuses on a young prisons officer meeting an older colleague, who is revealed to be the chief executioner. As their relationship intensifies, their backstories are revealed throughout the course of the film. It also touches on the death penalty from an executioner's point of view.

The Director Boo Junfeng will join in the discussion after the film.  His films, many of which show a preoccupation with places and historical and personal memory, have won prizes and acclaim and have been shown in film festivals around the world
