The Peranakan Museum

The Peranakan Museum is the first museum in the world to explore Peranakan cultures in the former Straits Settlements of Singapore, Malacca and Penang and their links with other Peranakan communities in Southeast Asia. The museum opened on 25 April 2008 after extensive renovations to transform it from Singapore's original Asian Civilisations Museum.

The Peranakan Museum features the main themes of Peranakan life in ten permanent galleries and is especially designed for family-friendly visits, with 20 interactive multimedia stations for children providing a seamless journey through the exhibits.

Ramayana Revisited: A Tale of Love and Adventure is the newest special exhibition at the Peranakan Museum. The Ramayana is one of the great poems of India that recounts the life and exploits of Rama, Prince of the Ayodhya kingdom and the hero of the epic tale. This rich story has been told and retold through the ages by saints, poets, scholars and common folk. The exhibition of 100 original artefacts sourced from the Asian Civilisations Museum's permanent collection have intentionally been drawn from different geographical locations to represent different historical and stylistic periods, as well as emphasise the universality of the epic. Don't miss this special exhibition on display through February 2011. Special guided tours are available (please see below). A number of public events are also planned in connection with this exhibition; please check our Public Events page for more details.
