What is a study group?
A study group is an informal group of 12-15 FOM members who meet on Wednesday
mornings to study aspects of Asian culture, history, art and religion.
Each member researches a chosen topic to prepare and deliver a 30-45 minute presentation. You may use PowerPoint or any other presentation format of your choice. If you are not familiar with PowerPoint, FOM offers a small class open only to study group participants (hint: this is an easy way to acquire a new skill set, and no prior experience is needed). The study group leader(s) will provide a list of subtopics to help inspire participants, but you are free to choose any topic relevant to the main theme.
Study group leaders are there to assist you and the group as needed. If you have questions, please email specifying "Study Group" in the subject line.

SPACES: SACRED AND PROFANE
Starting Wednesday January 18, 2012
In stone, wood, metal, bamboo or concrete, buildings are not merely defined spaces but enduring symbols of a culture, a people or a country.
Why is the Taj Mahal recognised as 'one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage'? What does the colour yellow or the number nine tell us about the Forbidden City? How does the Ummayad mosque differ from a Roman basilica? Perhaps you are curious about the different styles of Singapore's shophouses or would like to discover the feng shui underlying Hong Kong's modern skyscrapers. The round houses of the Akka, the longhouses of the Dayak, the temples of Angkor Wat and Nara, the domed stupas of Sanchi and Anurdadhapura--the diversity and richness of design and building is tremendous.
Choose a building or a monument, an architectural style or an entire tradition. Study the elements, share the history and discover the motivations and aspirations bound into these sizable and habitable masterpiecs.
Our study group is meeting once a week on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm for a maximum of 8 weeks.
