| Japanese docents (JD) provide regular guided tours at the National Museum of Singapore (NMS), Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM), The Peranakan Museum (TPM) and Singapore Art Museum (SAM) at 10:30 am from Tuesdays to Fridays, as well as the first Saturday of the month at 13:30 at NMS, and the second Saturday of the month at 13:30 at ACM.
Their goal is to build a friendly bridge between Singapore and Japan by introducing Singapore history, culture and art to Japanese visitors. See two recent articles about our JP programme that have appeared in Yomiuri, a Japanese-language newspaper circulated throughout Southeast Asia, China and Japan, here and here.
 JD New Trainees 2010
JD recruits new members every April and October who then undergo appropriate training. This past October, JD had 20 newcomers who are currently attending two lectures a week through December 2010. Japanese guided tours differ from other language tours in that many Japanese visitors cannot read the English-language gallery signboards. As a result, our Japanese docents perform a wonderful service for Japanese visitors to our museums.
All Japanese docents guide the NMS History Gallery, and then one additional museum--either SAM or ACM. They may additionally guide at TPM. There are guidelines for each museum gallery drawn up by the Japanese Docents' senior guides, but once confident, docents can tailor their own tours.
- If you are interested in Singapore history,
- If you are attracted to Southeast Asian beauty,
- If you are fascinated by Asian atmosphere. . .
You might be interested in becoming a Japanese docent. There are two training opportunities each year: in April and October. Please e-mail the JD Training Contact: jdtrainingcontact@yahoo.co.jp

Special Event: Japanese Fair "Sushi Rolls: Japanese-easy-to-eat food
Event Date: 25 November, 2010
The Japanese Docent (JD) graduates, class of Apr/2010 conducted the above Japanese Fair (JF) on 25th November.
First, participants were showed "how to roll sushi" on a DVD to give them a general idea. Then followed an actual demonstration before the participants' hands-on practice. To the JD's surprise, most of the participants were able to roll sushi after only their second attempt. While they enjoyed tasting their own sushi, participants were shown another DVD on "how to prepare sushi ingredients". Our participants packed home their new art pieces for their families to taste (along with their newly acquired sushi mat and recipe). It was a marvelous party. Thank you everyone for your kind participation. Our next JF will be scheduled in June 2011, so please look out for it.
