English-language docent training for the other museums will begin September 2010. A public information meeting will be held on May 11, 2010 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon in the Gallery Theatre of the National Museum Singapore (93 Stamford Road). No reservation is required. Cost of the training:

  • ACM, SAM, NMS: S$500 (Seniors: S$250)
  • TPM: S$400 (Seniors: S$200)

    FOM has been training individuals to guide in Singapore's museums for more than two decades. Docent-training programmes are available for the following museums and institutes:

    Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM)
    The Peranakan Museum (TPM)
    Singapore Art Museum (SAM)
    Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI)
    National Museum of Singapore (NMS)
    Heritage Conservation Center (HCC)

    New applications are currently being accepted for the 2010/2011 FOM docent training programmes at the Asian Civilisations Museum, National Museum of Singapore, The Peranakan Museum and Singapore Art Museum. Application Form

    Asian
    Civilisations
    Museum

     

     


    The 2009-10 docent training programme is currently preparing candidates to guide in the Asian Civilisations Museum. Training includes topics that cover the history, religion, culture and arts of China, South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Asia as well as the actual artefacts in the museum.

    The next FOM Training Program for ACM Docents begins in September 2010 and continues into mid-March 2011. Please watch this page for additional information as it becomes available.

    The Peranakan Museum

     

     

    The Peranakan Museum docent training course includes lectures by museum curators and recognized experts on Peranakan culture, Foundation Course training in Asian cultures, selected readings of related materials, Friday highlight tours, field trips to historic sites within Singapore and practical activities in the museum galleries.

    The next FOM Training Program for TPM Docents will begin in September 2010 and continue into mid-December 2010.

    SAM

    Singapore Art Museum
    The Singapore Art Museum has an impressive public collection of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian art. In addition to its permanent collection, there are also various temporary exhibitions for which training is provided.

    The next FOM Training Program for SAM Docents will begin in September 2010 and continue into mid-March 2011.

    NMS

    National Museum of
    Singapore
    The National Museum of Singapore presents the history, culture, and traditions of Singapore for both Singaporeans and visitors alike. It prides itself on introducing cutting-edge and varied ways of presenting history to redefine the conventional museum experience.

    The next FOM Training Program for NMS Docents will begin in September 2010 and continue into mid-March 2011.

    STPI

    Singapore Tyler Print Institute

    The Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI), 41 Robinson Quay, fosters printmaking, papermaking and paper-based art practice, collection and education. STPI acts as a catalyst in the development of leading artists through its Visiting Artist Programme (VAP), a collaboration between artists and professional staff at STPI. FOM Docents provide guided tours of the STPI workshop and paper mill, and exhibitions of work created at STPI by visiting artists.

    Docent training includes lectures and hands-on training in fine art printing processes and papermaking; continuing training focuses on the work of Visiting Artists in preparation for their exhibitions in the gallery.

    HCC

    Heritage Conservation
    Center
    The Heritage Conservation Centre (HCC) in Jurong stores and conserves the collections of the national museums. Docent training, conducted periodically by HCC, includes an introduction to collections care and management as practiced at HCC. Group tours are offered on weekdays through prior arrangement with HCC.

    Tours have been suspended during the current building programme. Recruitment and training will resume in late 2010.
